A Court of Thorns and Roses: Book Photography
At Lane + Co, we pride ourselves on being experts in creative book photography. Our passion lies in bringing stories to life, capturing their essence in visually arresting ways that resonate with readers and collectors alike. Recently, we had the honour of photographing the beloved A Court of Thorns and Roses series by Sarah J. Maas, creating two stunning themed shoots: Summer and Winter. Both shoots comprised five carefully styled images, each reflecting the magic and depth of this iconic series.
Through thoughtful art direction, meticulous prop curation, and an unwavering commitment to creative book photography, we brought this fantasy world into vivid focus. Here’s a closer look at how we did it.
Summer Shoot: A Blooming Celebration of Spring Court
When we conceptualised the Summer shoot for A Court of Thorns and Roses, our minds immediately gravitated toward the ethereal beauty of the Spring Court. As fans of the series know, the Spring Court is a realm alive with natural wonder—flowers blooming in every color, lush greenery, and sunlight that dances across the land. To do justice to this vivid imagery, we embraced the spirit of Spring Court, transforming our set into a floral wonderland.
The Vision
Our goal was to immerse viewers in the vibrancy of Spring Court, creating a visual feast that would appeal to book lovers and fans of creative book photography. We wanted the shoot to evoke feelings of renewal, love, and the enchanting allure of Feyre’s world.
The Process
Achieving this vision was no small feat. We brought in over 200 flowers, meticulously selecting blooms that mirrored the descriptions in the book. From soft pastels to bold, striking hues, every petal was chosen to complement the story’s lush setting. These flowers became the foundation of our visual narrative, guiding the design of each frame.
Lighting was another crucial element. We invested significant time in achieving the perfect balance of soft, natural light and strategic shadows. The interplay of light and texture was designed to mimic the whimsical, otherworldly atmosphere of the Spring Court.
The Result
The Summer shoot produced five distinct images, each bursting with life and detail. Whether it was a close-up of the book surrounded by a halo of petals or a wide shot showcasing the interplay of props, every image radiated the magic of Spring Court. This project not only exemplified our expertise in creative book photography but also pushed the boundaries of what we could achieve with art direction and set design.
Winter Shoot: A Cozy Nod to Christmas Gifting
While the Summer shoot was a celebration of nature’s vitality, the Winter shoot aimed for something equally enchanting but with a completely different vibe. This time, our inspiration came from the warmth and wonder of the Christmas season. We envisioned these photos appealing to readers looking for the perfect Christmas gift or cozy winter read.
The Vision
For the Winter shoot, we sought to create a sense of nostalgia and warmth, capturing the magic of the season while still honouring the mysterious undertones of A Court of Thorns and Roses. The goal was to create images that would stand out in holiday marketing while staying true to the series’ essence.
The Result
The Winter shoot yielded five images that exuded holiday cheer while maintaining the elegance and mystique of the book series. These photos were designed with the Christmas gifting audience in mind, making the series irresistible for fans and newcomers alike. The cozy, festive atmosphere was a testament to our ability to adapt creative book photography to different themes and occasions.
The Art Direction That Made It All Possible
Both the Summer and Winter shoots required an immense amount of planning and attention to detail. As experts in creative book photography, we understand that art direction is not just about arranging objects; it’s about storytelling. Every decision—from the color of a flower petal to the angle of a lantern—was made with the narrative in mind.
For the Summer shoot, this meant immersing ourselves in the world of Spring Court, allowing the story’s vibrancy and romance to guide our choices. For the Winter shoot, it meant channeling the warmth and mystery of the holiday season while staying true to the book’s essence. In both cases, our expertise in creative book photography allowed us to capture the magic of A Court of Thorns and Roses in ways that resonated with fans.
